A Kenyan youth and women advocate, technology entrepreneur and founder of <\/strong><strong>Girl Code Movement<\/strong><strong>, she is committed to empowering teenage girls and young women through digital transformation, self-awareness, career mentorship and economic empowerment. Through her work, she is helping young women acquire the skills and confidence they need to shape their own futures and contribute to their communities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gathu\u2019s journey began when she was just 24. While volunteering at a local education center, she encountered several young people who were ambitious, resilient and eager to succeed, but who lacked skills in technology, innovation and entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n<p>She decided to commit to help bridge that gap. Driven by her passion for tech, she founded Girl Code Movement. What started as a small community space, equipped with just one table and a few computers, has since grown into a broader initiative supporting teenage girls and young women in Kenya. From a teen mentorship program, the initiative has evolved to empower a lot of teenage girls and young women with digital skills and to help them explore career and entrepreneurial opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Through Girl Code Movement, participants take part to structured programmes in digital fabrication, civic technology, design thinking\u2026 These program help them strengthen their problem-solving abilities and encourage them to develop solutions to challenges affecting their communities.<\/p>\n<p>Since its creation, the initiative has continued to expand its reach. It has so far empowered more than 2,000 women across over 25 communities, with a particular focus on underserved communities.<\/p>\n<p>Winnie Gathu holds a bachelor degree in education from Kenyatta University. She is currently pursuing a training in computer programming from the Adeso Africa programming.
